The Gift of Hospitality

Written by Abdiel Medina, Fellows Class of 2026

“They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.”  Acts 2:46

One of the earliest practices of Christian believers was to open up their homes for people to gather together for food and fellowship. I’ve been growing and learning from this biblical practice since starting my journey in Fellows. From our weekly “Community Dinners”, I have been amazed with the countless people who invite our Fellows group into their homes to share a meal with them. Through those moments together, we have experienced fellowship, laughter, and inspiration from the vulnerability and wisdom of our many hosts.

Beyond the community dinners, I have been blessed by the hospitality of the Creasmans - my “host parents”. They have graciously extended their home and amenities to me. My host parents have also kindly allowed me to use their home to host my peers in Fellows and other guests. I appreciate how they also have patiently been teaching me skills on cooking, cleaning, and how to prepare a home for hospitality. Admittingly, I have not made the most delicious or complex meal, but it has been a blessing to share what I have with others. The community dinners and opportunity to host guests myself have been teaching me that when it comes to the practice of hospitality, the focus should not be on how much you can give but rather it is the heart posture of giving that matters. (2 Corinthians 9:7). As one humbly opens their home with others and takes the time to prepare a meal for fellowship, the love of God is being spread. This fosters an environment for memories to be formed, relations to be created and deepened, and lives to be transformed. My journey with Fellows has been a reflection of that; I entered the program with a bunch of strangers and now I cherish every Monday evening when I get to share a meal with my brothers and sisters in Christ.

I look forward to when I am able to start hosting people in my own home and create a space for fellowship over a meal.

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35 ESV
